Rob Colbourne OBE has spent his life proving the right path isn’t always the most traditional one. At 15, while others encouraged him to remain in sixth form, Rob felt a strong pull toward independence, responsibility, and the chance to earn his own wage. That instinct led him into the world of apprenticeships, a decision that would define not only his career, but his purpose.
Initially drawn to retail, Rob was inspired by how young and driven many store managers were. Aiming to become one himself, he explored opportunities that could accelerate his development. He received two offers: a prestigious Trainee Manager programme at Sainsbury’s, and a Level 2 apprenticeship at Debenhams. Despite the prestige of the Sainsbury’s route, it was the passion and belief of the Debenhams manager who interviewed him that convinced him to choose the apprenticeship that promised genuine support and growth.
The 18-month programme shaped him profoundly. Through hands-on learning and real responsibility, Rob grew a strong work ethic, sharp business values, and an unshakable commitment to high standards. His confidence flourished as he travelled nationwide, gaining experience in flagship stores across Manchester, Chester, London’s Oxford Street, Cambridge, and Edinburgh.
The experience sparked what would become a 40-year mission to champion apprenticeships in all their evolving forms – YTS, Modern Apprenticeships, Foundation Apprenticeships, and today’s standards. Rob saw time and again how transformative apprenticeships were not just for individuals but for the organisations and industries they supported. As he often expressed, “Apprenticeships have always been one of the most powerful ways to gain skills, build confidence and create real opportunity – for individuals, employers, and the wider economy.”
Across four decades, Rob played a direct or indirect role in the training or planning of more than 50,000 apprentices – people who would go on to contribute to UK businesses at every level. His commitment earned him national recognition, including nominations for the AAC Outstanding Contribution to the Development of Apprenticeships and an OBE for Services to Apprenticeships and Skills.
Yet the accolades were never what mattered most. Rob’s greatest satisfaction came from meeting former apprentices years later and hearing how the right advice, belief, and guidance had shaped their lives and careers.
Rob Colbourne’s story is a testament to the power of choice, opportunity, and lifelong learning. From a determined 15-year-old seeking independence to a respected CEO and OBE recipient who has helped shape the futures of tens of thousands, his journey stands as a shining example of what apprenticeships can achieve when championed with passion, purpose, and belief.
