How a PTP apprenticeship is helping Finlay build a successful career
When Finlay Cousins graduated with a degree in Architecture, he knew he wanted to pursue a career in project management rather than follow the traditional architectural route. By undertaking a Level 4 Associate Project Manager Apprenticeship with Performance Through People (PTP) while working at Powell Design & Construction, he has been able to combine academic knowledge with hands-on industry experience, developing the skills and confidence needed for a successful career in construction project management.
As a Construction Project Coordinator, Finlay works across both the design and construction sides of the business, supporting projects from the early design stages through to completion. His varied role includes producing drawings in Revit, carrying out measured surveys, liaising with clients, consultants and suppliers, coordinating site activities, supporting project delivery and assisting with commercial aspects of projects. Working in a design and build environment has given him valuable experience across the full project lifecycle.
After completing his degree, Finlay wanted to continue learning while gaining practical experience that would support his long-term career ambitions.

Alongside developing his project management knowledge, the apprenticeship is also helping him work towards CIOB Chartership.
Growing in Confidence
Since starting the programme, Finlay has grown in confidence and taken on greater responsibility within the business. He is now more comfortable taking ownership of tasks, communicating with clients and contractors, and contributing to project decisions. The apprenticeship has also helped him become more organised and develop a stronger commercial understanding of construction projects to complement his architectural background.
He has been able to put this learning into practice through greater involvement in live projects, including playing a key role in coordinating an extensive extension and renovation project. His responsibilities have included managing subcontractor coordination and acting as the primary point of contact for both the client and the site team.
One of the biggest lessons Finlay has taken from the apprenticeship has been the importance of effective communication throughout every stage of a project.
“Technical knowledge is important, but successful projects rely just as much on keeping everyone informed and managing expectations.”
Making an Impact at Powell Design & Construction
Finlay’s progress has been recognised by Alexandra Powell, Managing Director of Powell Design & Construction, who has watched him develop from an Architectural Assistant into a confident and dependable Project Coordinator.
Alexandra said:
“Since starting the apprenticeship, Finlay has become much more confident in taking ownership of projects and seeing the bigger picture. He is no longer just focused on the task in front of him. He is thinking about what needs to happen next, who needs what information, and how decisions affect cost, programme, site progress and the client experience.”
Today, Finlay helps coordinate several live projects, keeping information flowing between clients, consultants, suppliers and site teams. He also supports procurement, tracks material lead-in times and prepares weekly client updates, helping projects run more efficiently.
Alexandra added:
“The apprenticeship has helped Finlay become a really important link between our design team, site team, clients and consultants.”
She says his development has brought greater consistency to project delivery, making it easier for senior members of the team to delegate work with confidence. She also highlighted the positive impact he has on colleagues, noting that he willingly supports newer team members and work experience students, helping to develop the next generation entering the industry.
Finlay’s achievements have also been recognised beyond the workplace. He has recently been shortlisted for both the Young Construction Professional of the Year and Young Architect or Design Professional of the Year categories at the Building the Future Awards, recognising his ability to bridge the worlds of design and construction.

Throughout his apprenticeship, Finlay has benefited from the support of both Performance Through People and Powell Design & Construction, combining structured learning with practical workplace experience.

Alexandra believes apprenticeships are an important investment in developing future talent, giving people the opportunity to build their skills through real responsibility, structured learning and practical experience while helping businesses develop confident, capable professionals for the future.
Looking Ahead
Looking ahead, Finlay hopes to become a Chartered CIOB Construction Project Manager before progressing into senior leadership within the industry. He sees his apprenticeship as a vital stepping stone towards achieving those ambitions by combining recognised qualifications with practical experience on real projects.
Reflecting on his journey so far, Finlay says:
“My apprenticeship has given me the confidence, knowledge and practical experience to turn my passion for construction and design into a long-term career.”
